When a coating fails prematurely, the cost is rarely just the paint. Docking schedules slip, warranties get contested and maintenance budgets blow out. Independent third party inspection catches the problems early, while they are still cheap to fix.

Coating Challenges on Marine Vessels

Large blue ship in dry dock under a roof, with support equipment and railings in the foreground.

Marine coatings work harder than almost any other protective system: permanent immersion, ballast tank condensation cycles, mechanical damage at fenders and fairleads, and the waterline zone where atmospheric and immersion systems meet.

Add the realities of a docking, compressed schedules, multiple contractors sharing the hull, and recoat windows that close overnight, and the difference between a coating that lasts its design life and one that fails early is usually decided in the dock, not the datasheet.

Independent and Unbiased

How Defender Corrosion Control Supports the Marine Sector

Providing independent coating inspection and verification for vessels and maritime infrastructure, newbuild, refit and in-service. We work with shipyards, sustainment contractors, vessel operators and port authorities across Western Australia's maritime sector, from the Henderson shipyard precinct to operating ports. Learn more about our Coating Inspection and Verification service.

For vessels and infrastructure already in service, our In-Service Coating & Corrosion Surveys track coating condition against classification survey cycles and support long-term integrity planning.

Because Defender Corrosion Control is independent, with no commercial relationship to any coating manufacturer or applicator, every finding we report protects the asset and the contract position, not a supplier.

We inspect steel and concrete infrastructure across the exposure spectrum, from sheltered C3 environments through to C5 coastal and Im2 immersed structures under ISO 12944 and AS/NZS 2312. Typical asset classes include:

Water and wastewater treatment structures

Storage tanks and pipework

Public buildings and utilities structures

A typical engagement is an In-Service Coating & Corrosion Survey: the asset is divided into defined inspection zones, coating condition is assessed and classified against ISO 4628 and recognised rust scales, severity is rated, and the findings land as a prioritised picture an asset manager can take straight into maintenance planning and budget submissions.

Public infrastructure work often overlaps with the marine and resources sectors. Owners can also explore our Government and Infrastructure and Mining, Oil and Gas industry services.

We deliver pre-delivery and post-sea-trial coating inspections for newbuilds, in-service coating and corrosion surveys aligned to classification survey cycles, and compilation of Coating Technical File documentation so vessels carry a compliant lifetime coating record. Where specialised marine protective systems are involved, we apply the same disciplined, zone-based inspection methodology. When a marine coating fails early, our Failure Analysis & Remedial Specification service establishes why, and what to do about it, with evidence that supports warranty claims and pre-docking planning.

For naval sustainment specifically, see our Defence industry page.

Corrosion and Coating Services for Marine Assets

A vessel program rarely needs just one thing. A new build inspection, a fleet condition survey and a premature coating failure are usually the same story at different stages. Defender Corrosion Control supports the full cycle.

Our Inspection and Corrosion Management Approach

Defender's coating inspection process begins with the coating specification itself, then follows the work through every stage.

Findings are documented with calibrated instrumentation, photographic evidence and Coating Technical File documentation, giving builders and owners a clear, audit-ready record of coating performance and a documented quality assurance trail across the vessel's life.

This structured, independent methodology is what allows Defender to give builders, operators and contractors a defensible, standards-aligned answer to a simple question: is this protective coating system going to protect the vessel, and its asset integrity, for as long as it's supposed to?

Project Experience

In 2025 Defender Corrosion Control's principal inspector delivered independent verification of above-waterline hull coating remediation on a Commonwealth patrol vessel docking at a Henderson shipyard. Over a 12-week docking we verified surface profile, chloride contamination, dust cleanliness and dry film thickness at every inspection and test plan stage, identified first-coat underbuild in time for correction before the next coat, and facilitated the methodology for the above-waterline and below-waterline interface between two contractors' scopes, a methodology subsequently written into the coating manufacturer's revised specification. Read the full case study.

Defender's founder and Managing Director, Nicholas Riley, is an AMPP Senior Certified Coating Inspector (CIP Level 3), the highest level of coating inspector certification, and holds an AMPP Marine Coatings Inspection Specialty certification. His marine background includes independent inspection within a Royal Australian Navy surface fleet sustainment alliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is independent marine coating inspection important?

Marine coatings face permanent immersion, condensation cycles, mechanical damage and the demanding waterline zone, and dockings compress the work across multiple contractors. Independent inspection verifies each stage against the specification, catching problems like underbuild or contamination before the next coat locks them in.

  • Do you inspect newbuilds as well as in-service vessels?

Yes. We deliver pre-delivery and post-sea-trial coating inspections for newbuilds, in-service coating and corrosion surveys aligned to classification survey cycles, and Coating Technical File documentation so a vessel carries a compliant lifetime coating record from delivery onward.

  • How do you work with classification society requirements?

Our methodology aligns with the IMO PSPC and the requirements of the major classification societies (Lloyd's Register, ABS, DNV, BV, RINA). Where a builder's or owner's specification applies, we inspect to that specification directly, and our reporting supports classification survey cycles.

  • Can you inspect ports and maritime infrastructure, not just vessels?

Yes. Beyond vessels we survey wharves, jetties and immersed or splash-zone structures, where the same immersion-grade coating knowledge and zone-based methodology apply.

  • What happens when a marine coating fails early?

Our Failure Analysis & Remedial Specification service establishes the root cause through site inspection, material testing and documentation review, then specifies the corrective system. The evidence supports warranty claims and pre-docking planning so the failure is fixed once.

  • When should we engage Defender Corrosion Control on a docking or newbuild?

Early. Whether you are planning a docking, taking delivery of a newbuild, or managing coating condition across a fleet, independent verification from the start protects the asset and the contract position, and the cheapest defects to fix are the ones caught at surface preparation.
