General heavy industry

When a coating fails prematurely, the cost is rarely just the paint. Docking schedules slip, warranties get contested and maintenance budgets blow out. Independent third party inspection catches the problems early, while they are still cheap to fix.

Corrosion Challenges on Defence Assets

Defence assets operate in the most severe exposure environments recognised by ISO 12944, C5 marine atmospheres and Im2 seawater immersion, and they are expected to stay available.

Aluminium and steel hulls, dissimilar-metal details, ballast and void spaces, and long sustainment cycles all create conditions where coating breakdown starts small and compounds quietly.

On a Defence platform, a coating failure found late is not just a maintenance item. It is lost availability in a contested docking schedule.

Independent and Unbiased

How Defender Corrosion Control Supports Defence

Providing independent coating inspection and corrosion consultancy to Australia's Defence sector. We support Defence primes, shipyards and sustainment contractors with inspection, verification and technical assurance on the protective systems that keep Defence assets in service. Learn more about our Coating Inspection & Verification  service.

We also assess and mentor coating contractors working in Defence environments, verifying competency before work starts rather than discovering gaps after it finishes.

Because Defender Corrosion Control is independent, with no commercial relationship to any coating manufacturer or applicator, every finding we report serves the program, not a supplier.

Defender Corrosion Control provides mining coating inspection and oil and gas coating inspection services, working alongside asset owners, project engineers and maintenance teams throughout the asset lifecycle, from protective coatings application through to in-service condition assessment.  Our independent inspectors verify surface preparation, monitor coating application, carry out condition assessment and quality assurance checks, and flag defects before they become failures. Learn more about our Coating Inspection & Verification service.

Where coating failures are identified, our Failure Analysis & Remedial Specification service helps determine the root cause and recommend corrective actions. For ongoing asset maintenance, our In-Service Coating & Corrosion Surveys provide scheduled condition assessments that support long-term integrity planning.

Because Defender is not aligned to any contractor or coating supplier, every finding is reported in the asset owner's interest. That independence gives mining and energy operators confidence that protective coatings are performing as specified, contractors are meeting their obligations, asset integrity is protected, and maintenance planning is directed to where it is genuinely needed.

Workshops and storage facilities

Where a coating or corrosion-control system has already failed, our Failure Analysis & Remedial Specification service establishes the root cause through site inspection, material testing and documentation review, then specifies the corrective system: surface preparation criteria, coating selection, application parameters and acceptance criteria. The failure is fixed once, with evidence that supports warranty and contract positions.

Defence work often overlaps with wider marine sustainment. Operators can also explore our Marine industry services.

Corrosion and Coating Services for Defence Assets

Defence sustainment rarely needs just one thing. A docking scope, a contractor competency question and a coating failure are usually the same story at different stages. Defender supports the full cycle.

Our Inspection and Corrosion Management Approach

Defender's coating inspection process begins with the coating specification itself, then follows the work through every stage.

Findings are documented with calibrated instrumentation, photographic records and coating technical file documentation, giving programs a clear, audit-ready record of coating performance and a documented quality assurance trail for sustainment planning.

STAGE 01

Review the Coating Specification

STAGE 02

Verify Surface Preparation

STAGE 03

Check Environmental Conditions

STAGE 04

Monitor Coating Application

STAGE 05

Test Dry Film Thickness

STAGE 06

Visual Inspection for Defects

This structured, independent methodology is what allows Defender to give programs and contractors a defensible, standards-aligned answer to a simple question: is this protective coating system going to protect the asset, and its availability, for as long as it's supposed to?

Our Defence Experience

Defender's founder and Managing Director, Nicholas Riley, has spent more than twenty years on Defence, marine and heavy-industry assets. An AMPP Senior Certified Coating Inspector (CIP Level 3), the highest level of coating inspector certification, and a qualified Master Painter, Nick's Defence experience includes service as an independent coating inspector within a warship asset management alliance sustaining Royal Australian Navy surface fleet frigates.

More recently, Defender Corrosion Control delivered independent verification of hull coating remediation on a Commonwealth patrol vessel sustainment docking at a Henderson shipyard, coordinating quality outcomes across multiple contractors' scopes. A full account is available in our marine case study.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is independent coating inspection important on Defence assets?

Defence platforms operate in C5 marine and Im2 immersion environments and are expected to stay available. Coating breakdown that starts small compounds quietly, and a failure found late costs availability in a contested docking schedule. Independent inspection catches defects at surface preparation, when they are cheapest to fix.

  • How do you handle security and information on Defence work?

Our information handling is aligned with the Australian Government Information Security Manual and DISP expectations. We describe our capability without disclosing project specifics: locations, schedules and platform details stay off the public record.

  • Do you work with Defence primes and sustainment contractors?

Yes. We support defence primes, shipyards, and sustainment contractors with independent inspection, verification and technical assurance, and we assess and mentor coating contractors working in defence environments, verifying competency before work starts.

  • Why choose an independent inspector instead of the coating contractor?

A contractor inspecting their own work has an inherent conflict of interest. As an independent inspector with no supplier relationship, Defender Corrosion Control reports only to the program, so findings are objective and defensible when a warranty, contract position or assurance audit tests them.

  • What standards do you inspect to on Defence assets?

AMPP/NACE coating inspection standards, ISO 8501 and ISO 4628, ISO 12944 exposure classifications, AS 1627, ASTM and SSPC defect classification, and IMO PSPC where classification requirements apply. Where a program specification nominates particular standards or acceptance criteria, we work to that specification directly.

  • When should we engage Defender Corrosion Control on a docking or sustainment scope?

Engage early, before surface preparation starts, ideally at docking scope stage.
