Independent Contractor Evaluation for Coating Projects

Workers in blue protective suits walking through a large industrial warehouse.

Delivering independent contractor evaluation and practical mentoring to support high-quality coating, surface preparation and inspection outcomes across marine, industrial and Defence projects. When coating work goes wrong, it is rarely a mystery afterwards: the gaps in competency, procedure or accountability were there before the first blast. Our job is to find them first.

Our evaluation process benchmarks contractor performance against industry best practices, project specifications, safety and environmental standards, manufacturer requirements, and classification and Defence expectations. We identify technical, procedural and competency gaps, providing clear, objective feedback that supports accountability and measurable improvement.

Our mentoring goes beyond oversight. We work directly with contractors to improve knowledge, refine procedures and strengthen on-the-job execution. Whether the issue is surface preparation, coating application, inspection readiness or documentation quality, we provide practical, real-world coaching that leads to more consistent and reliable results.

What Our Contractor Evaluation Covers

Identify Contractor Knowledge Gaps

Assessment of technical, procedural and compliance weaknesses, providing targeted guidance to close capability gaps.

Skills, Training & Qualification Assessment

Evaluation of workforce readiness, training records and qualifications to ensure contractors meet project, OEM and regulatory requirements.

Define Clear Contractor Responsibilities

Establishment of unambiguous expectations, roles and deliverables to improve accountability and reduce misunderstanding.

Identify Gaps in Procedures

Review of contractor operational processes to uncover inefficiencies, risk exposures and quality vulnerabilities.

Practical Guidance & Support

Hands-on mentoring and coaching to improve contractor execution, documentation quality and jobsite performance.

Verification of Competency (VOC) for Coatings Personnel

A ticket on file is not the same as competence on the job. Our verification of competency for coatings personnel assesses whether blasters, applicators, supervisors and inspection support staff can actually perform the work to the standard the project demands. We review training records and qualifications, then verify practical execution against project, OEM and regulatory requirements on real tasks: surface preparation, application technique, environmental control and documentation. The outcome is a clear, defensible record of who is competent for what, so crewing decisions, audits and Defence assurance requirements rest on evidence rather than assumption.

NACE/AMPP Certified Coating Inspection

Every project is led by a qualified coating inspector holding AMPP/NACE certification, the internationally recognised benchmark for coating inspection competence. Our inspectors bring hands-on Defence, shipyard and industrial experience, which means a NACE coating inspector on your project is reading the job through the eyes of someone who has done the work, not just audited it. That combination of certification and trade background is what turns inspection findings into practical decisions your contractors can act on.

Contractor Evaluation & VOC FAQs

  • What is verification of competency for coatings work?

Verification of competency (VOC) for coatings work is a practical, evidence-based check that a worker can perform their assigned tasks, such as abrasive blasting, coating application or inspection support, to the required standard. It goes beyond checking tickets and training records: competency is verified against project specifications, manufacturer requirements and relevant standards on the actual type of work being performed.

  • Is this the same as a generic VOC assessment?

No. A generic voc assessment or verification of competency process is often a broad training-compliance exercise. Ours is specific to protective coatings: it is conducted by technically experienced coating specialists who assess surface preparation, application technique, environmental control and documentation quality against the standards that govern coating work, including Defence and classification expectations where they apply.

  • What does a contractor evaluation involve?

We benchmark the contractor's people, procedures and delivery against industry best practices, project specifications, safety and environmental standards, manufacturer requirements, and classification and Defence expectations. The evaluation identifies technical, procedural and competency gaps and delivers objective findings with a practical improvement plan, so both the client and the contractor know exactly where things stand and what to fix.

  • Is this about policing contractors or helping them?

Both, honestly, and that is the point. The evaluation gives asset owners independent, defensible visibility of contractor capability. The mentoring then works directly with the contractor's team to close the gaps: refining procedures, coaching execution and lifting documentation quality. Contractors who come through the process are more capable, and the working relationship is usually stronger for it.

  • When should contractor evaluation happen?

The highest-value point is before award or before work starts, when gaps can be closed without schedule pressure. Evaluation also adds value mid-project where quality issues are emerging, and mentoring works at any stage. Engaging early is consistently cheaper than discovering a competency gap through a coating failure.

  • What do we receive at the end?

A clear evaluation report covering competency, procedural and compliance findings, verification of competency records for assessed personnel, and a practical improvement plan with defined responsibilities. Documentation is structured to support project assurance, audits and Defence-standard record-keeping requirements.
