Coating Condition Assessment Built for Maintenance Decisions
We deliver structured, in-service coating condition assessments that evaluate how protective coating systems are performing and degrading over time. Every assessment gives you an accurate picture of where your coatings stand, and what that means for your maintenance budget.
Our assessments cover:
Fixed plant
Structures -steel and concrete
Process facilities
Infrastructure
Defence & Maritime related assets
Our inspection methodology aligns with recognised international and industry standards, including ISO coating and corrosion assessment standards, SSPC/AMPP inspection and surface condition criteria, ASTM test methods for coating performance and degradation, and project, client or regulatory specifications as applicable. We assess coating degradation using ISO 4628, ASTM, SSPC and European rust scales, enabling consistent identification and classification of blistering, cracking, flaking and delamination, general and localised corrosion, under-film corrosion and coating breakdown patterns.
What Our Coating Surveys Cover
Coating Condition Evaluation & Breakdown Classification
Independent, standards-based evaluation of coating performance using recognised rust scales and degradation metrics to classify breakdown severity, determine remaining service life and support risk-based maintenance decisions
Defect Documentation & Sampling
Identification and documentation of coating defects and failure modes against ISO, ASTM and SSPC criteria, with collection and preservation of coating samples for laboratory analysis where warranty or failure investigation requires it.
Inspection Planning & Area Mapping
Structured segmentation of assets into defined inspection zones to support accurate assessment, prioritisation and repeatability over time.
Thickness Measurement & Surface
Testing Non-destructive DFT measurement, environmental monitoring and surface contamination testing to support condition assessment and remedial decision-making.
Maintenance & Shutdown Support
Condition reporting to support maintenance planning, shutdown scopes, contractor briefings and verification of remedial works.
Why Asset Owners Choose Us for Condition Assessment
Trade-Informed, Field-Tested Approach
Our inspectors have done the work they assess, so findings translate into practical maintenance decisions, not theory.
Independent and Defensible Assessments
Unbiased condition ratings that stand up to scrutiny in warranty assessments, contract reviews and audits.
Standards-Aligned Methodology
ISO, ASTM and SSPC-aligned inspection and classification, applied consistently across every survey interval.
Defence, Industrial and Heavy Asset Experience
ISO, ASTM and SSPC-aligned inspection and classification, applied consistently across every survey interval.
Coating Condition Assessment FAQs
What is a coating condition assessment?
A coating condition assessment is a structured, standards-based evaluation of how a protective coating system is performing in service. It identifies and classifies degradation such as blistering, cracking, flaking and corrosion breakdown, rates severity against recognised scales like ISO 4628, and translates the findings into clear priorities for maintenance, remediation or further investigation.
How is an in-service coating survey different from coating inspection?
Coating inspection verifies new work as it is applied, from surface preparation through to final cure. An in-service coating survey assesses coatings that are already in operation, measuring how they have degraded over time and what remaining life they have. Both feed the same goal: keeping the asset protected at the lowest whole-of-life cost.
How often should condition assessments be carried out?
It depends on the asset, environment and criticality. Aggressive marine or processing environments justify shorter intervals, while sheltered structures can run longer between surveys. Because we divide assets into defined inspection zones, each survey is repeatable and comparable, which lets us recommend an interval based on the actual degradation rate rather than a generic schedule.
What standards do you assess against?
We assess against ISO coating and corrosion assessment standards, SSPC/AMPP inspection and surface condition criteria, and ASTM test methods, using ISO 4628, ASTM, SSPC and European rust scales for degradation classification, alongside any project, client or regulatory specifications that apply to your asset.
What do we get at the end of a survey?
A clear, decision-ready condition report: zone-by-zone condition ratings with photographic evidence, defect classification and severity, risk-based remediation priorities, and the supporting data (DFT readings, environmental conditions, salt testing where performed). The report is written to directly support maintenance planning, shutdown scoping, contractor briefings and warranty positions.
Can surveys be scheduled around shutdowns and operations?
Yes. Condition assessments are commonly aligned with planned shutdowns, dockings or maintenance windows, and our reporting is structured to feed shutdown scopes and contractor briefings. Early survey data ahead of a shutdown means the scope is based on evidence, not estimates.
